West Chester Liberty Chamber Alliance issued the following announcement on March 8
The Spicy Olive, founded by Melanie Cedargren, is Cincinnati’s original tasting emporium for olive oils and balsamic vinegar. Located in West Chester, Montgomery, and Oakwood, they offer over 40 types of balsamic vinegar and 25 different naturally flavored oils. What Melanie most emphasizes is the amazing health benefits of her oil. “My passion is to educate people on how good it is for them!” she exclaims. Olive oil is high in polyphenols, a natural chemical molecule that is anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer. Yet, these benefits can degrade depending on the way the oil's processed, bottled, and exposed to time and light. Common grocery-store oils are packed in plastic bottles and stored under fluorescent lights for a long time. In comparison, Spicy Olive’s oil is the freshest it can be, being crushed at the right time, packaged in dark bottles, and imported quickly from the source.
Melanie's passion for the business came from a 2006 trip to Italy where she ate at a vineyard that also grew olives. “It was delicious,” she said, “I knew what I used at home would never taste as good as these!” She dove into research about its various health benefits and felt inspired to provide healthier, tastier oil to the US, she decided she'd start her business. Through this, she hopes to help people have better health by being a good member of the community. She works with the Pink Ribbon Girls and speaks at church groups, helping teach about olive oil’s health benefits. She also looks forward to celebrating the business' tenth anniversary by bringing back the shop’s cooking classes. Her current aspiration is to someday provide trips to farms and vineyards around the world. As one can see, The Spicy Olive is a great example of how a passion for health and good food can come together into a business through hard work and a hunger for knowledge. Because of it, the local community is a healthier and tastier place.
