The House Local Government Committee in Ohio has commenced hearings on House Bill 139, aimed at formalizing the state's fire hydrant operation standards. The bill's sponsor, State Representative Thomas Hall from Madison Township, announced this development.
House Bill 139 seeks to mandate the State Fire Marshal to adopt and enforce the State Fire Code. This code includes periodic inspections, testing, and maintenance of fire hydrant systems across Ohio. "This legislation promotes emergency preparedness and increases public safety, ensuring peace of mind when an emergency arises," stated Hall.
The proposed bill will also integrate existing guidelines from the Ohio Administrative Code regarding minimum standards for inspection, testing, and maintenance:
- Annual inspections are required for fire hydrants as well as after each use. An annual flow test and general maintenance are also necessary.
- Fire service main piping must undergo an annual inspection with a flow test every five years.
- Strainers on fire service main piping require inspection and general maintenance following each use.
Currently, House Bill 139 is pending further review by the House Local Government Committee.
