The City of Trenton is seeking to fill the position of Part-Time Income Tax Clerk. The current hourly pay range for that position is $14.80 to $19.01 DOQ and experience.

General Description
Under the supervision of the Tax Commissioner, the Income Tax Clerk is responsible for various Finance and Tax related tasks and special projects as assigned. This position will assist the Tax Commissioner with auditing of tax returns, maintenance of tax records, and monitoring compliance issues. The nature of the work performed by the Finance Department requires that an employee in this classification establish and maintain close cooperative working relationships with personnel in other departments and the general public.
Job Duties
Answers telephone and greets visitors; provides information or refers inquiries to appropriate personnel; routes incoming calls and records messages; responds to emails and faxes as necessary.
Utilizes computerized data entry equipment and various word processing and file maintenance programs to enter, store, and/or retrieve information; maintains pertinent files and records; scans and copies documents as necessary; ensures files are complete and accurate.
Processes incoming and outgoing mail, including preparing photocopies and collating materials; distributes mail to appropriate department or employee.
Clerical work, data entry, file maintenance, filing.
Researches and provides requested information as needed.
Investigate, identify, and initiate collection proceedings of delinquent income tax accounts, both business and residential.
Work with delinquent tax accounts to set up appropriate payment plans and schedules.
Provide explanation of the City’s tax code and policies.
Prepare chronically delinquent accounts for referral to outside collection agencies and/or for legal action.
Perform annual reconciliations for business accounts employee withholding taxes.
Audit tax returns and enforce compliance with filing requirements for residents and businesses.
Process weekly ACH postings for residents who are on payment plans.
Assist with the preparation of the monthly reports, tax refund listings, and other financial information for the Finance Department.
Investigate and resolve taxpayer problems and complaints; assure proper level of customer service.
Assist in the daily operations of the Tax Division.
Participate in meetings, seminars, etc., as appropriate.
Reviews tax returns for accuracy, makes corrections as necessary.
Establish payment plans with tax filers.
Performs related duties as assigned.
Essential Skills, Knowledge, Abilities
Knowledge of:
Applicable federal, state, and local laws, rules, codes, and regulations related to assigned activities.

Modern office practices, methods, procedures, and equipment.
Record-keeping principles, procedures, and techniques; including adequate documentation.
Knowledge of computers and proficiency with computer software, such as Outlook, Word and Excel; familiarity with SSI VIP Accounting and/or MITS Tax software system a plus.

Background check required-must be able to pass background check.
Minimum Qualifications
Possession of a valid state driver’s license.
Obtained High School Diploma or GED;
Must be bondable
Six (6) months work experience in finance or taxation; or
Equivalent combination of education and related experience required.
Preferred Qualifications
One (1) year of work experience in municipal finance and federal tax rules and regulations;
