WEATHER FORECAST - CLEARING OF ROADS | City of Monroe
It is anticipated that the upcoming weather event will start as rain on Thursday evening and transition to snow Thursday night into Friday morning with the expectation of 1”-3” of accumulation and plummeting temperatures.
The problematic part of the storm is that by starting with rain Thursday we will not be able to pretreat the roads with salt brine. Unfortunately, the temperature will drop from forty degrees Thursday evening to negative three degrees early Friday morning while the rain is transitioning to snow. This is going to cause a flash freeze of the roadway surfaces making it nearly impossible to remove the snow from the streets once it begins to stick. Salt starts to become ineffective around twenty degrees. With the snow falling through the nighttime hours, the lack of traffic on the roads will aid in the snow freezing to the roadway. With temperatures staying in the single digits all day Friday and only reaching a high of fifteen degrees on Saturday, it will be difficult to remove the snowpack especially in the neighborhoods.
We will do everything possible during this storm event to make the streets as passable as we can for the holiday travels, but we want to make everyone aware that the conditions presented are going to make clear streets very difficult if not impossible until we see rising temperatures.
This may be a difficult storm to combat and there will be times through Thursday night into Saturday that travel conditions will be very dangerous. We encourage all residents to remove all vehicles from the roadways; the ice conditions make it very difficult to safely maneuver around parked vehicles.
PLEASE BE SAFE IF YOU HAVE TO BE OUT DRIVING!
