Two pieces of legislation aimed at modernizing the Ohio Police and Fire Pension Fund and protecting sensitive information about first responders have received their first hearings in House committees.

State Rep. Thomas Hall (R-Madison Twp.) is the sponsor of both bills. House Bill 296 seeks to ensure the long-term stability of the Ohio Police and Fire Pension Fund by increasing employer contributions. Under the bill, employer contributions for police will be increased to 24% by January 1st, 2027, aligning them with fire departments.

During sponsor testimony, Rep. Hall emphasized the importance of proactive measures to address potential crises. He stated, "This legislation lets us implement a sound fiscal solution before we find ourselves in the middle of an emergency. It also assures that we fulfill our promise to tens of thousands of police and firefighters across Ohio."

The second bill, House Bill 265, aims to exempt certain sensitive information about first responders from disclosure under public records law. It also clarifies additional information protected under the Ohio Revised Code. Documents such as work schedules, redaction request forms, and affidavits of Ohio's first responders will be protected from public use.

Rep. Hall highlighted the risks faced by first responders and their families if sensitive information, such as addresses, were made public. He stated, "This critical legislation will protect those who spend their days, and even sacrifice their lives, to protect our families and our communities."

House Bill 296 will now undergo further consideration by the House Pensions committee, while House Bill 265 will be reviewed by the House Civil Justice Committee.

These bills reflect the commitment of Ohio legislators to prioritize the well-being and safety of police officers, firefighters, and other first responders. By ensuring the stability of the pension fund and protecting sensitive information, the state aims to support those who dedicate their lives to protecting and serving the community.
