State Rep. Sara Carruthers shared her passion for pets and the importance of closure during her testimony on House Bill 379, also known as Lassie's Law, in the House Transportation Committee. The bill aims to ensure that deceased pets found on roadways are scanned for microchip identification before disposal.
Speaking in support of the legislation, Carruthers expressed her personal connection to the issue, stating, "I am an avid dog lover. I have two wonderful dogs named Ebony and Ivory, who I cannot imagine living without." She emphasized the emotional significance of Lassie's Law, highlighting that it provides families with a sense of closure during difficult times of pet disappearance.
Under Lassie's Law, if a deceased pet with a microchip is found on the roadside, road crews are required to scan for identification. If contact information is retrieved, the crew must notify their supervisor, who will then contact the relevant department overseeing the roadway. Pet owners will then have up to 24 hours to retrieve their beloved companion after being notified.
The bill will undergo further hearings in the House Transportation Committee as it progresses through the legislative process.
