State Representative Jennifer Gross has expressed her support for the Ohio House's recent approval of the Human Trafficking Prevention Act. This legislation aims to increase criminal penalties for offenses related to human trafficking, kidnapping, and abduction.

Ohio ranks among the states with the highest numbers of reported human trafficking cases, predominantly involving sex trafficking. Under current state law, individuals convicted of human trafficking face prison terms ranging from 10 to 15 years.

"This legislation represents a strong step forward for human rights in Ohio. It sends a clear message that those exploiting the vulnerable will face the full force of justice and demonstrates that human trafficking will not be tolerated in Ohio," stated Gross, who co-sponsored House Bill 47.

The proposed act seeks to expand penalties by setting a minimum sentence of 15 years for human trafficking offenses. Additionally, it offers enhanced protections for victims under 18 or those who are developmentally disabled by increasing sentences to 25 years to life imprisonment.

House Bill 47 has successfully passed through the House and is now set to move on to the Ohio Senate for further evaluation.
